Why We Made This:

  • Understanding development through genetics is crucial in psychology, but the concepts can be overwhelming. Many people confuse inheritance patterns, have difficulty linking developmental milestones to genetic influences, or struggle with genetic disorder differences. We created charts to simplify these topics, illustrating how genetics and environment interact in development. These charts clarify milestones, genetic principles, and common disorders, highlighting the connection between biology, experience, and behavior.

Learning Objectives:

  • Explain Piaget's stages of cognitive development and key processes like assimilation and accommodation.
  • Understand Vygotsky's sociocultural theory, scaffolding, and zone of proximal development, and how they complement or contrast with Piaget's work.
  • Compare and contrast Freud's psychosexual stages and Erikson's psychosocial stages, noting outcomes of successful and unsuccessful resolutions.
  • Apply adolescent egocentrism concepts (imaginary audience, personal fable) to real-life situations and understand their developmental significance.
  • Recognize how culture and social context influence development, as emphasized by Vygotsky and others.
