Why We Made This:

  • Understanding workplace leadership models and management strategies is a cornerstone of I/O psychology—but many individuals find this content abstract, disjointed, and difficult to apply. From Fiedler’s Contingency Theory to Lewin’s Model of Change, and from shift schedules to the Hawthorne Effect, this PDF aims to provide clarity and cohesion to a wide range of topics related to workplace management and leadership styles. We designed this resource to present core theories in a visually structured, example-rich format that helps students see how these concepts function in real-world settings.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand different work schedules, including compressed workweeks, flextime, and rotating shifts, and their pros and cons.

  • Identify how shift type (day, swing, graveyard, rotating) impacts productivity, health, work-life balance, and job satisfaction.

  • Compare major leadership theories, including Fiedler’s Contingency Model and Hersey & Blanchard’s Situational Leadership Styles.

  • Distinguish between high and low LPC leaders and understand which leadership styles fit specific situational demands.

  • Recognize the impact of task structure, leader-member relations, and position power on leadership effectiveness.

  • Learn how leadership approaches (telling, selling, participating, delegating) relate to employee maturity and readiness.

  • Explore the Hawthorne Effect and its role in shifting management strategies toward human-centered approaches.

  • Apply Path-Goal Theory to understand how directive, supportive, participative, and achievement-oriented leadership styles guide motivation.

  • Differentiate between transactional and transformational leadership, including how each influences employee behavior.

  • Understand the five types of leadership power (legitimate, reward, coercive, expert, referent) and how they shape influence.

  • Learn Lewin’s Force-Field Model of Planned Change and its three phases: unfreezing, changing, and refreezing.
