Why We Made This:

  • Theories relateded to memory and forgetting can be challenging to navigate due to complex terminology and overlapping concepts. To simplify this, we created these organized charts that break down memory and forgetting into clear, digestible parts. These charts cover various memory types, processes, lifespan changes, and factors influencing forgetting.

Learning Objectives:

  • Clearly differentiate between major memory systems — short-term, long-term, and sensory — using side-by-side comparisons.
  • Understand the subtypes of memory, including episodic, semantic, procedural, associative, and non-associative, with examples and visual aids.
  • Explain how memory develops and changes across the lifespan, including key phenomena such as infantile amnesia, the reminiscence bump, and patterns of age-related decline.
  • Identify which types of memory are most vulnerable to aging (like episodic) and which tend to remain stable (like procedural).
  • Recognize the factors that enhance or impair memory retention, including emotional significance, novelty, and stages of cognitive development — all illustrated with clear visuals for easier recall.
