Why We Made This:
- Understanding development through genetics is crucial in psychology, but the concepts can be overwhelming. Many people confuse inheritance patterns, have difficulty linking developmental milestones to genetic influences, or struggle with genetic disorder differences. We created charts to simplify these topics, illustrating how genetics and environment interact in development. These charts clarify milestones, genetic principles, and common disorders, highlighting the connection between biology, experience, and behavior.
Learning Objectives:
- Identify key physical, cognitive, social-emotional, and language milestones from birth through early childhood.
- Understand genetic principles, including dominant/recessive traits and genotype-environment correlations (passive, evocative, active).
- Differentiate types of genetic inheritance patterns — autosomal, X-linked, chromosomal — and how they influence development.
- Recognize and describe common genetic disorders such as Down syndrome, Fragile X, Huntington's disease, and how they manifest in behavior and development.
- Apply knowledge of genetics and development to case examples and clinical contexts.
