Why We Made This:
- Understanding substance use disorders is essential—but it’s easy to get lost in dense diagnostic criteria, overlapping symptoms, and confusing terminology. We designed this PDF to simplify and clarify one of the most nuanced areas in mental health diagnostics. We break down DSM-5 criteria, substance categories, intoxication/withdrawal effects, and treatment models in an organized, digestible format. We also included real-world clinical tips, guidance on person-first language, and practical strategies for answering exam-style questions.
Learning Objectives:
- Master DSM-5 SUD criteria by understanding the 11 diagnostic criteria in four domains: impaired control, social impairment, risky use, and pharmacological indicators.
- Differentiate substance use from substance-induced disorders, apply severity and remission specifiers.
- Distinguish between substance classes, comparing stimulants, depressants, opioids, sedatives, hypnotics, anxiolytics, and inhalants.
- Recognize patterns of intoxication and withdrawal, including physical symptoms, behavioral signs, and medical issues.
- Understand Treatment Modalities, including pharmacological treatments (e.g., methadone, Suboxone, naloxone) and evidence-based therapies such as Motivational Interviewing, CBT for SUD, and Contingency Management.
- Use symptom-matching for EPPP vignettes to interpret subtle diagnostic clues (e.g., pupil size, speech, presentation).
