Why We Made This:
- Motivation is the driving force behind productivity, satisfaction, and retention, but understanding the psychology behind it can be overwhelming. That’s why we created this visual guide to demystify complex theories and turn them into clear, practical insights you can apply when answering I/O questions on the EPPP. This guide simplifies foundational theories, including Expectancy Theory, Herzberg’s Two-Factor Theory, Theory of Work Adjustment, and Group Dynamics, through the use of colorful visuals, real-world examples, and memorable comparisons that bring I/O psychology to life.
Learning Objectives:
- Differentiate between job enlargement and enrichment and understand their impact on motivation.
- Apply Expectancy Theory by understanding effort-performance-reward links (expectancy, instrumentality, valency).
- Explain Herzberg’s Two-Factor Theory, distinguishing between hygiene factors (prevent dissatisfaction) and motivators (drive satisfaction).
- Understand the Theory of Work Adjustment, including the concepts of satisfaction, satisfactoriness, and person-environment fit.
- Identify and categorize different group tasks, including additive, disjunctive, conjunctive, and compensatory tasks.
- Recognize social dynamics in group settings, including social loafing, groupthink, social facilitation, and social inhibition.
