Why We Made This:

  • Individual therapy models are central to both clinical practice and EPPP exam prep, but they can be tough to keep straight—especially when theoretical frameworks overlap or use similar terminology. Folks often find it difficult to distinguish between psychodynamic, humanistic, and brief therapies or recall which interventions belong to which model. We created this visual guide to bring clarity and structure to these essential theories.  It’s perfect for individuals who want to see the “big picture” of therapy models in a way that sticks.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify key components of psychodynamic approaches, including psychoanalysis, analytical psychotherapy, and individual psychology.

  • Understand the role of defense mechanisms, unconscious drives, archetypes, and early development in shaping personality and behavior.

  • Describe the humanistic therapy models—person-centered, gestalt, and existential—and their focus on self-actualization, authenticity, and emotional experience.

  • Learn core techniques from experiential therapies, including the empty chair, exaggeration, and role-playing.

  • Explore the foundations and stages of brief therapies, such as interpersonal therapy, motivational interviewing, solution-focused therapy, and the transtheoretical model of change.

  • Apply interventions like miracle questions, scaling, and open-ended questioning to brief therapy scenarios.

  • Distinguish between theoretical principles like acceptance, autonomy, insight, and behavioral change across therapy models.
